Program Notes - Zhulong
The ÖòÁú (zhulong) or ¡®Candle Dragon¡¯ lived in the magical mountain beyond the ³àË® Chishui River. ÖòÁú is one of the most ancient and traditional Chinese legends. The changing of night to day and the cycle of the four seasons was all due to the zhulong. When his eyes opened, it was daytime, and his eyes closed, it became night; his breath would cause the wind to blow. The first movement honors the light he gives to the earth; the second movement is a lullaby dedicated to the night that he brings his eyes to a close. The third movement is a dance of the winds and gusts he causes with his breath.
"Zhulong" was commissioned by Buffalo Philharmonic's Associate Principal Cellist Feng Hew in 2019. The 2020 premiere was delayed due to Covid-19, and the premiere was finally realized February of 2024 by Feng Hew and the Camerata Chamber Orchestra of Buffalo.
