In the Pocket
A driving and exuberant piece playing with the duality of the phrase “in the Pocket” in jazz and in surfing.
In jazz: “In the pocket” – a groove, a tight rhythmic performance, a moment when the ensemble locks together and plays as a single entity.
In surfing: “In the pocket” – The fastest, steepest part of a wave, under the breaking lip, where surfers catch the most speed and energy.
my grandpa used to braid esparto grass for hours under the shadow of the fig tree
A work to reflect on the immediacy of today, to promote the doings and makings of hands, the hands as a symbol of our direct relationship with the world around us to enquire, experience, understand. A work to promote unproductivity as a means of underloading in the face of an overload of production, consumption, and optimization in our hectic everyday lives.
In this work, performers will gradually replace their playing with some kind of handcraft of their choice. Perhaps origami, drawing or writing, sewing or knitting, braiding esparto grass. Any craft that could be clearly optimized by a machine or through digitalization. These doings will be carried out slowly, calmly, and with no specific goal in mind, feeling the ease of having no expectations.
I remember my grandfather braiding esparto grass for hours with his bare hands, creating coasters, baskets, and sandals under the shadow of the fig tree behind the farmhouse
Composer Bio – Juhi Bansal
Juhi Bansal is an award-winning composer, conductor and teacher. Originally from India and Hong Kong, her music draws upon elements as disparate as Hindustani music, the spectralists, progressive metal, musical theatre and choral traditions to create deeply expressive, evocative sound-worlds. Spanning every genre of acoustic concert music to multimedia to film, her music is always driven by storytelling, with a particular focus on stories of strong women, wilderness, and celebrating cultural and ideological diversity.
Composer Bio – Pilar Miralles
My name is Pilar Miralles and I was born in Almería (Spain) in 1997. I am a composer and researcher currently based in Helsinki (Finland). I completed my Master's Degrees in Electroacoustic Composition and Composition in Madrid and Helsinki, respectively, and now I am a doctoral candidate in the Arts Study Programme of DocMus Doctoral School at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. My artistic research project is titled Composer asleep; The creative (non)practice of not-doing. In this project, I aim to rethink what resting means in the context of a productivity-driven society. Through the composition of three concert-long works, I question the role of the composer as active producer and explore alternative agencies leading to resting and allowing rest in the face of hyper-abundance and the consequent depletion it causes.
My work as a composer has been supported by Teosto, MES, and Pro Musica Säätiö.
